Surprise at hangi
PA Wellington Digging a hangi turned up a surprise for a Wainuiomata man yesterday when he struck a mortar bomb in the soil. Frank O’Connor was covering up the Christmas hangi when he struck the bomb, packed with explosives, but without a fuse head. “It was about the size of a 1.25 litre Coke bottle ... we just looked at one another then put it to one side,” he said. Army experts called to the property later defused the bomb at Trentham headquarters. Mr O’Connor said the property had been used by the United States Army as part of a camp base 40 years ago. Although the bomb was old, it was still live and could have exploded if the fuse head had still been intact. The Army would check to see if other bombs were on the property, he said.
