Famine warning issued

A warning that Ethiopia is only the forerunner to a series of famine tragedies likely to occur all over the African continent has been issued by the Save the Children Fund. The president of the fund, Mrs Betty Pearson, said in a Christmas appeal to members that there can be no relaxation of aid for a long time yet. “Famine has spread well beyond the borders of Ethiopia and the need now for emergency help in many other countries is tragically apparent,” Mrs Pearson said. The amount of aid needed to save the lives at risk is put at millions of dollars, she said. “Emergency aid will be needed for at least another 12 months and in Ethiopia food support will-probably be required for the next decade.”
