New caps in Irish team

AFP Dublin Nigel Carr and Brian Spillane, both back row forwards, will win their first international caps for Ireland in the Five Nations championship rugby union international against England at Landsdowne Road on January 19. They are two of three changes, plus a positional switch, made to the team beaten by Australia last month.

Carr, who has won a record number of Ireland “B” international caps, comes in on the flank for Ronan Kearney.

Spillane, a 24-year-old doctor, gets the No. 8 position as a result of his

performance for the Blues (possibles) side in last Saturday’s trial. He replaces Willie Saxton, of the Garryowen club. Keith Crossan, who missed the game against Australia because of illness, regains his place on the wing, while Michael Kiernan, after an outstanding trial, moves to the centre in place of Moss Finn, who is dropped. The team is:

H. P. Mac Neill, T. M. Ringland, B. J. Mullin, M. J. Kieran, K. D. Crossan; P. M. Dean, M. T. Bradley; P. A. Orr, C. F. Fitzgerald (captain), J. J. McCoy; D. G. Lenihan, W. A. Anderson; P. M. Matthews, B. Spillane, N. J. Carr.
