Softball off

PA Wellington Women’s softball received a knockback when the South Island tour by the People’s Republic of China team in February was cancelled yesterday. A spokesman for the New Zealand Women’s Softball Association, Kevin Baldwin, said the Chinese could not tour ‘because of financial difficulties. “We are particularly disappointed about the cancellation, as apart from the attraction of an international team here, the tour would have been of benefit to us from a playing-point

of view,” he said. “After all the planning of timing and logistics, it’s heartbreaking to have everything cancelled. It’s the sixth tour we have had to cancel over the past two years.” The tourists were to have stopped in New Zealand on their way to the South Pacific series in Australia, and were to play a southern selection in their “test” match in New Zealand. As the New Zealand team are also to participate in the Australian series, the tour was seen as an ideal build up for both sioes.
