Ministry reverses meat decision
PA Dunedin The Ministry of Agriculture in Wellington has backed down over its opposition to the provision of meat-inspection services at the Burnside freezing works’ export lamb cuts department. Inspection services would now be provided over the full extended hours being worked in the department—from 6.15 a.m. to 11.30 p.m.—until the end of January, the Burnside manager of Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, Mr I. Graham, has said, after learning of the decision.
In the meantime, the Ministry, the State Services Commission, and the Public Service Association will negotiate a more permanent agreement on working extended hours. The decision will enable the Bumside workforce to fulfil a 1500tonne export order of lamb cuts for France. The Ministry last Tuesday ordered its local meat inspectors, who had decided they would work the extra hours, to work normal hours only. Mr Graham said the company was pleased with the change of heart.
