Lion N.Z. may be barred from race

PA Auckland The champion round-the-world sloop Lion New Zealand, tipped to take line honours in this year’s Sydney to Hobart classic, may be barred from the race. Sydney race organisers say the yacht will not be allowed to compete with its

paint scheme and advertising logos. The skipper, Peter Blake, will be told of the decision today when his sloop berths, in Sydney. Contacted on his yacht yesterday, Blake said he was ready for a fight with authorities and expected to meet a few problems.

He was embroiled in a

similar sponsorship controversy in the 1980 race when he sailed the maxi yacht Ceramco New Zealand. After weeks of pressure by the Cruising Yacht Club organisers, Blake removed the logos and won line and handicap honours in the boat, renamed New Zealand.
