School players justify seedings
The top seeds, Gregory Young and Rachel Wilson, justified their rankings by winning the open singles titles at the Court and Field Fischer Canterbury secondary schools’ tennis championships at Wilding Park last Friday. Young comfortably accounted for the second seed, Jeffrey Brightwell, 6-1, 6-3, and Wilson also conceded only four games when beating the second seed, Lani Ratana, 6-3, 6-1. Results.— Open Boys’ singles.— Semi-finals: G. Young beat M. Young, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2; J. Brightwell beat J. P. Andre, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Final: Young beat Brightwell, 6-1, 6-3. Boys’ doubles.— Semi-finals: G. Young and Andre beat Brightwell and H. Jamieson, 62, 6-7, 6-3; A. Chesterton and R. Gray beat T. Howe and G. Beattie, 6-4, 6-4. Final: Chesterton and Gray beat Young and Andre, 6-1, 6-3. Girls’ singles.— Semi-finals: R. Wilson beat K. Young, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4; L. Ratana beat M. J. Burke, 6-2, 6-3.
