Clever play in N.Z. Schools’ 37-6 win

NZPA staff correspondent Edinburgh

The New Zealand Schools rugby team scored five second-half tries to beat Scottish Schools 37-6 at Murrayfield on Saturday. In the first international match of their European tour, the New Zealanders put together some clever play to overcome a determined Scottish side. New Zealand scored two tries in the first half to lead 15-6 at half-time. The Scottish points came from two penalty goals to the first five-eighths, Duncan Cameron. The New Zealand coach, Graham Henry, said that the tally of seven tries, six from the two wingers and the full-back, was “very pleasing.” “We’ve come across here to play a fluent, attractive style of football and we’ve teen managing to dp. that. Ifet’s hope we can continue,” henry told NZPA. *

Incisive running from the inside backs led to the tries, and a number of slick moves were worked by a talented backline.

The wingers, Daryl Halligan (Hamilton Boys) and Craig Dorgan (Roncalli College, South Canterbury), seized the chances they were given and ran forcefully to score two tries each. Halligan’s carving runs as the extra man defeated a sound Scottish defence.

The full-back, Wayne Holmes (Kelston Boys, Auckland), was used effectively in the backline, picking up two tries after dashes by the centre, Wiremu Maunsell (St Stephens, Auckland), and first five-eighths, Stephon Bachop (Hagley High, Canterbury). Scotland were adventurous opponents when receiving a steady supply oMball in the first spell and

punched some holes in the New Zealand defence. The full-back and captain, Marshall Wright, was one of several Scottish backs who proved a handful when running with the ball.

The New Zealand forwards started strongly and looked too powerful for the home pack, but Scotland improved, and tested the tourists up front.

The New Zealand halfback, Jon Preston (St Bede’s, Canterbury), was occasionally caught by his opponent, Martin Robertson. Scorers were:

New Zealand Schools 37 (Holmes (2), Halligan (2), Dorgan (2), Robin Brooke (Mahurangi Collage, North Auckland), tries; Holmes three conversions, one penalty goal). Scottish Schools 6 (Duncan Cameron two penalty goals).
