Govt studying S.I. irrigation schemes
Wellington reporter The Government is unable to say at this stage which of the planned South Island irrigation schemes will proceed. • A number of factors, including grant rates, would affect their progress, according to the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman, answering a series of questions in Parliament by Miss Ruth Richardson (Nat., Selwyn). Mr Colman said he was aware that farmers were reassessing their position in the light of the Budget provisions, but that it would be premature to give even
an indication of the likely outcome. Miss Richardson asked if one of the factors affecting decisions to proceed with irrigation was the post-Bud-get cost of $5OO a hectare a year. Mr Colman said indications were that farmers and irrigation committees, as well as regional and united councils, were still very keen. The Government was being pressed to continue with the schemes that were being planned. The Government would support only the efficient use of water resources, Mr Colman said.
