Port tonnage increases

Provisional overseas cargo statistics for the 10 months ended October, 1984, show that the value and tonnage of imports and exports handled through New Zealand ports is slightly up on the corresponding period last year. The figures released this week by the Statistics Department show that 7,847,000 tonnes of cargo with a value of more than $7960 million were loaded for export. This compares with 7,400,000 tonnes valued at $6781 million loaded for the same period last year. Imports also maintained an increase over last year's figures with the 6,564,000 tonnes unloaded having a value of more than $8894 million. For the 10 months to October, 1983, 6,242,000 tonnes valued at $6731 million were imported. Taharoa, with 1,328,000 tonnes of ironsands exported, is the largest exporting port by tonnage. Auckland, with $2213 million is the largest exporting port by value. With an importing figure of 1,749,000 tonnes valued at more than $3580 million, Auckland also headed the list as the country’s largest importing port. Lyttelton was the South Island’s main exporting port, loading 603,000 tonnes of cargo valued at $599 million. Bluff headed the list as the South Island’s largest importing port, unloading 682,000 tonnes of cargo valued at $243 million.
