Road race records

Kevin O’Sullivan (University) and Anne Ross (Rovers) broke the senior men’s and women’s records and beat the titleholder to win the Lincoln Lope 15km road running race on Saturday evening.

O’Sullivan took the lead after about 2km and at the end was nearly a minute ahead of the titleholder, Mel Radcliffe, with Kevin Barnes (Christchurch) eight seconds behind Radcliffe for third. O’Sullivan’s record time was 47min 365, compared with Radcliffe’s time last year of 48.54 when the conditions were different, with strong winds. On Saturday the weather was calm and cool.

Anne Ross was running in only her second inter-club race after starting running earlier this year. Her first attempt, in the Big Dipper 10km race saw her finish second to Mary Warne (University) in 38:5. Ross raced throught the first skm in under 19 minutes and the 10km in under 38 minutes

and recorded a creditable 57min Ils.

Ross led all the way. Second for about skm was Margaret Walker (Christchurch), who withdrew about halfway, leaving the titleholder, Lynn Epps, in second position. Epps was the first veteran home and followed by Colleen McKenzie (Olympic), another veteran. Then came another two runners with only'about a year’s running behind them,. Denise Fantham, a graduate of Don Cameron’s Pioneer marathon clinic, just managed to pass Helen Grant (Toe H) on the line to finish fourth, but both were credited with the same time.

Graeme Eng (University) was the first place-getter in the veteran’s class retaining his title, but he was nearly a minute slower than last year, as was second-placed Peter Watts (St Martins) who also finished in the same position last year. One hundred and two

runners finished, compared with 111 last year.
