Council seeks solution
Parking enforcement in Christchurch parks and reserves may some day be handled by City Council officers. Illegal parking, especially on the fringes of Hagley Park, has concerned the council for years. The council’s parks and recreation committee said yesterday' that a more detailed study was needed to determine the legality of appointing parks staff as
enforcement officers. Cr John Burn, the committee’s chairman, said that no “big stick” should be taken against motorists until proper facilities were provided either in or near Hagley Park. A report on formal parking facilities at the park will be received by the council soon. That will include proposals for Hagley Park fringes, better use of existing car-parks, and use of adjoining properties.
Providing parking should not be the sole responsibility of city ratepayers, said Cr Mollie Clark. Many city parks were used by many residents in the region. She said that it was time the council looked “on the other side of the road” for Hagley Park parking. The council would also need improved parking controls dt Queen Elizabeth II Park, where new internal roads and car-parks had been built.
