Mr McLay attacks Budget
PA Dannevirke The Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, has launched a strong attack on the Budget, accusing the Government of “ratting” on Bremises8 remises and failing to help le needy. He told 200 people at the Dannevirke Town Hall that the Budget was that of a Minister determined to cause hardship. “This is a Budget which fails to help those in need,” he said. “If the Budget had been fair and equitable I would have supported it, but it pulls the rug from under the farming sector and takes away the income of the over 60s. It attacks those who are not in a position to adjust their incomes.” Mr McLay pledged that a National Government would not bring down a Budget of that nature, “nor would National promise one thing
then break its promise and do another as Labour has done.” “Deliberate lies have been fed the voters of New Zealand. The elderly have been led to believe that their incomes were safe, only to find that not so,” Mr McLay said. “The voters of this country now know that Labour cannot be . trusted. Labour has ratted on every promise made to the elderly.” Mr McLay said that the National Party would give a greater say to members and tell voters that National had taken the message delivered by voters in Labour’s landslide victory. People were already coming back to the party, Mr McLay said. The caucus would be reorganised next year with “proven skills, experience, and new talent incorporated.”
