PA Gisborne Auckland has narrowly won the Prudential under-22 cricket tournament from Northern Districts in Gisborne after a count-back. Both teams had impressive victories and were tied with 21 points. But after net batting and wicket averages for both teams over the entire tournament were found, Auckland was declared the winner.
The main inspiration for Auckland’s win against Central Districts yesterday came from Derek Scott, who scored the only century of the tournament with 109. His impressive knock carried Auckland to 196 for 2 in reply to the 195 by Central.
Scott’s innings contained a full range of wellexecuted shots with his 100 coming up in 168 minutes and including 17 fours.
He received support from the opener, Grant Douglas with 76. The two put on 187 for the second wicket. Northern Districts had a four-wicket win over Canterbury. Canterbury batted first for 245 for 6 on a good strip and in reply Northern reached 248 for 6 after only 52 of the allotted 66 overs. Most of the N.D. batsmen scored well with Murray Stadler top scoring with 53. Otago scored its first win, defeating Wellington by six
Wellington batted first and were all out for 169 after being contained by some tight bowling. In reply, Otago reached 172 for four, Kassem Ibadullah recording an unbeaten 76. Scores:
