Fowler wins award

Brian Fowler was last evening named as the Woolston Working Men’s Club’s first “sportsman of the year.” After an outstanding season at national, regional and provincial cycling levels, Fowler represented New Zealand in the individual road race and points race at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Fowler headed off a talented list of contenders for the club title. Eleven others, from eight sports, were nominated. The judges were Gary Clarke, a former New Zealand rugby league representative and national selector, John Coffey, of “The Press” sports department, and Ray Cairns, of Radio Avon.
