Wiri woolstore strike ends after 32 days

PA Hamilton The 32-day Wiri woolstore strike which blocked the export of wool through Auckland and delayed seasonal payments to farmers has been settled. Seventy storeworkers agreed yesterday to resume work at 8 a.m. today, after two days of intensive talks over their union’s claim for a site agreement.

The Woolbrokers’ chairman at Wiri, Mr Michael Harkness, said cheques for wool auctioned on October 23 and previously strikebound, would be mailed to farmers this week. Under the settlement the company had not agreed to any increases on award or effective rates, he said. However, there had been agreement to provide protective winter clothing in the new award to be negotiated in February, and the company had also agreed to participate in talks early next month which would look at job classifications in woolstores.
