Education grants ‘misused’
PA Wellington The School Committees’ Federation believes the grant school committees receive is being misused because of Education Department policy. It has asked the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, to overturn the policy. The federation’s president, Ms Maureen Bamford, said last evening that at present transport costs of ancillary school staff such as librarians must be met from the grant. “However, the incidentals grant was not designed for the purpose of meeting staff employment costs. Instead, it is supposed to meet the general running costs of the schools.” She said ancillary staff should be reimbursed for transport costs in the same way as teachers, from a separate fund.
