Cricket test doubt
NZPA-Reuter Calcutta The England cricket tour of India suffered a new blow yesterday when authorities asked for the postponement of the third test in Calcutta.
The West Bengal State Government said in a letter to Indian cricket authorities the test could not go ahead on December 26 because of national elections on December 24.
The England team’s programme has been up in the air fro® the moment it arrived in India on October 31, the day Indira Gandhi was assassi-
nated. The itinerary has been changed several times, including a detour to Sri Lanka when anti-Sikh riots broke out while the team was in New Delhi. A Cricket Association of Bengal vice-president, B. N. Dutta, told reporters a possible new date for the test in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal, would be decided at a meeting of the Indian Cricket Board on November 21. Calcutta, India’s most populous city, is one of the country’s rjhost volatile regions, and unrest is feared during the election.
