Teacher quotas set
Wellington reporter Quotas would allow 425 secondary and 80 kindergarten trainee teachers to be admitted to teachers’ college courses next year, , said the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, yesterday. This comes after an increase in the primary quota of 135 trainee teachers approved recently. Mr Marshall said that immediate adjustments had been made to provide teachers for the improvements to the reading-recov-ery programme announced in the Budget. The secondary and kindergarten quotas had been maintained at last year’s level. Further discussions on improvements to secondary and kindergarten staffing would be heeded to work out detailed needs for recruitment. Secondary and kindergarten quotas would need to be adjusted, Mr Marshall said, but more consultation was needed before a final decision could be made.
