Peace
Sir,—The morning service broadcast from the Christchurch Cathedral on November 11 began with a quote from Jesus Christ, who said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” I thought that perhaps on this Armistice Sunday, the preacher, Dr David Coles, was going to face up to the situation at last. But I was wrong. The greater part of Dr Coles’ sermon was a recap of the agonies suffered in two World Wars. His main theme seemed to be that peace cannot be achieved without suffering. Unhappily, Dr Coles completely missed the point made by Jesus Christ, when he said, “My way is easy.” Obviously, if every professing Christian throughout the world loved his or her neighbour, as .Christ suggested, wars, private or international, just could not happen. Only a tiny fraction of Anglicans, the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship, realise that the majority of Christians have betrayed the Son of Man by ignoring His pacifist teaching. — Yours, etc.,
DAVID COYLE. Wellington,
November 12, 1984.
