Open drains spark petition

A petition has been presented to the Christchurch Drainage Board complaining about dangerous and unsightly open drains in east Christchurch.

The residents say the drains are a health hazard and a danger to young children.

The 135 petitioners in Shirley, Marshland, and St Albans want the board to begin piping or covering the drains. They are particularly concerned about drains in Philpotts Road, Hills Road, Quinns Road, and Marshland Road.

The petitioners had thought that the board intended to pipe the drains

eventually, although they said little progress had been made. The petition was given by Mrs Marianne Alderdice to the board’s operations and services committee yester- _ day. Board staff will investigate it, and report to the next committee meeting. Bexley tip The committee declined a request to use board land at the Bexley tip for a land revitalisation project. The chairman' of the Christchurch Civic Pride campaign, Mr Newton Dodge, said that the campaign organisers wanted to use the. land for up to two years for the

project. They planned to revitalise the land, using waste materials. The project supervisor had studied in the United States, where she had turned a junk yard into a thriving garden. Funds were to have come from both Government and private sources, and labour from employment schemes. The Bexley tip land was particularly suitable for the project because an old recycling shed was on it, Mr Dodge said. The project would not cost the board anything. It would need only to delay dismantling the building for the period of the project.

The committee’s chairman, Mr C. H. Russell, said that the board had promised to remove the shed and convert the land to farmland. Delaying this would mean that the land would remain unsightly for a further two years. Mr Russell said he would be happy for the project to go ahead if the board had hot planned to rebeautify the area. He would be pleased for the project to use other board land.

Mr Ron Wright said that people in east Christchurch had put up with an unsightly tip face at Bexley for long enough. It was time to clean it up.
