Trainee intake ‘not fair’

Christchurch Teachers’ College has not got its fair share of the increase in primary teacher trainees, says a member of the College. Council, Mr David Waghorn. Although the college’s allocation had been increased by 17 to 104 for 1985, this was not as big an increase as other colleges had had, he told a meeting of the council yesterday. “We have not had our share (of the increase) in

relation to other colleges and other education board areas,” said Mr Waghorn. Both the Auckland and Dunedin teachers’ colleges had had their quotas increased 21 per cent, compared with a 19 per cent increase for Christchurch. Wellington Teachers’ College had had a 24 per cent increase in its quota. The council’s Nelson representative, Mrs Diana Doogue, said there should

be some relation between the number of people an area sent for training and the number it was expected to place in schools. The Nelson area had been allocated 16 positions for primary trainees, compared with'l4 this year. “The Nelson area has 2.3 per cent of the total number of primary pupils in New Zealand. On that basis we should have 18 trainees,” Mrs Doogue said.
