PA Wellington Five petitions asking the Government not to repeal voluntary unionism legislation were presented when Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Mr R. M. Gray (Nat., Clutha) presented the petition of Trevor Wilson and 44 others; Mrs Annette ' King (Lab., Horowhenua) presented the. petition of Margaret Jeromson and 18 others; Mr J. F. Luxton (Nat., Matamata) presented the petition of Gordon Lamb and 33 others; and Mr D. W. A. Marshall (Nat., Rangitikei) presented the petition of M. J. Abiss and 40 others.
The petitioners also called for a proposed Bill of Rights to contain the freedom of workers to belong or not belong to a union. The Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, tabled the Actuary’s report on the valuation of the National Provident Fund.
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, tabled the annual report of the Fishing Industry Board.
Members moved 17 notices of motion.
Mr W. E. Cooper (Nat., Otago) gave notice of his intention to introduce the Lakes District Waterways Authority (Shotover River) Empowering Bill. Ministers answered 13 questions. The Opposition was unsuccessful in its call for a snap debate on the cancellation of land settlement ballots this year and on problems facing settlement farmers in general The Speaker, Sir Basil Arthur, said the matters were continuing ones that could be discussed during the Budget debate. Three. private members’ bills were introduced and referred to the Local Bills Select Committee. The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, introduced the Mount Smart Regional Recreation Centre Bill and the Auckland Regional Authority (Mount Smart) Expenditure The Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, introduced the Dunedin Town Belt Roads Closing and Regulation Amendment Bill. Members began debating private members’ notices of motion. The debate ended when Parliament adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. The Budget debate continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. The debate was interrupted when the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
