New terminal’s role

The Union Shipping Group's new White Bay terminal in Sydney Harbour will plav a significant role in New Zealand and Australian trade activities, said the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Neville Wran, in Sydney recently. Mr Wran emphasised- the importance of Closer Economic Relations in his speech at the handling over ceremony of the $6 million terminal at Rozelle. The ceremony was attended by the chairman of the Union Shipping Group, Sir Peter Abeles, the group’s director, Mr John Keegan, and other executives from Australia and New Zealand. Australia’s main port, Sydney, was a vital link with the strengthening freight chain connecting Australia and New Zealand, Mr Wran said. Sir Peter said that the White Bay terminal would enable the Union Shipping Group to improve its service for New Zealand shippers as well as customers throughout Australia serving the trans-Tas-man and Australian coastal routes. It was appropriate that the terminal had opened at a time when trans-Tasman cargo was showing a marked upturn, he said. The Union Group had been using inadequate terminal facilities in Sydney at Darling Harbour. The move to White Bay was an important step for the company, he said. The terminal employs a staff of 140, including 91 watersiders. It is 389 m long, with a wharf extension of 90m for mooring. Other features include a rail siding and provision for container cranes. About 90 ship calls a year are expected with a cargo throughput of about 800,000 tonnes. All types of cargo will be bandied at the terminal, ranging from 4.4 m to 12.1 m, timber packs, mobiles, heavy lifts and over-length cargoes.
