Mafia connection
Sicilian police have seized assets valued at $6.6 million from a former Mayor of Palermo, arrested recently on charges of having links with the Mafia and illegally exporting capital. The police said they seized the assets after opening safe deposit boxes belonging to Vito Ciancimino, aged 60, bn the orders of local magistrates. The boxes contained: bonds, stocks, chequebooks, and other financial papers. Ciancimino, a leading figure in' Sicilian politics for 30 years, was arrested and taken to Rome’s maximum security Rebibbia Prison after evidence against him had been provided by a former Mafia chief, and police informant Tommaso Buscetta. — Palermo.
