Chch, writer wins prize for short story
PA Tauranga AChristchurch writer, Rita Hughes, has won the Tauranga writers’ group national short story competition. Ms Hughes was presented with a $5OO award at a function on Sunday evening. Her story was selected from 275 entries. The judge, Mrs Margaret Widler, of Avondale, said that Ms Hughes’ story, “Scream," handled the subject of rape in a delicate manner. “Thoughts, feeling, events, hurt, anger, and touching sadness were expressed in an unusual manner,” Mrs Wilder said.
Other prizewinners were: Runners-up, $lOO prizes: “The Beel,” Leonie Dixon, Palmerston North; “Woman of. Death,” Linda Raymond, Wainuiomata; “Old Morgan,” Len Chambers, Levin; “A Matter of Choice," Rowan Bishop, Paremata; "Spaced Out,’ 1 Iris Timmings, Gisborne. Highly commended: ‘The Track Suit," Darryl Ware, Whangarei; "A Score to Settle,” Mrs L. E. Orman, Auckland; “Sun All Seasons,” Ruby Corbet, Tauranga; "Wasteland," Mona Candy, Tauranga; “Ralph, Male Unit 9," Glenis Jones, Auckland.
