Double trouble proves old adage wrong

NZPA-AAP Melbourne Lightning is said never to strike twice in the same place, but bolts blasted the police station at Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, in southeast Victoria, twice early the other day. A police spokesman said that no-one on duty in the station was injured when the first lightning bolt struck at 1 a.m. He said the first strike hit the station and also blasted two power poles outside the station, bringing down live power lines on the station roof.

Light bulbs in the station blew out and communica-

tions to the station’s eight patrol cars were cut The spokesman said a stand-by power generator was used to restore power, but this was put out of action when the second lightning bolt hit soon after the generator started. The power supply was later restored.
