Float dollar, says M.P.
PA 1 Wellington The Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr de Cleene, says he believes the Government should float the New Zealand dollar.
Addressing Federated Farmers yesterday, Mr de Cleene said the pressure on New Zealand to devalue
Was considerable. He made it clear that he was presenting a personal view, but said it was one he intended to put to the Government caucus. "If I were to' treat the Government as a client and I addressed it to the problem as a commercial lawyer, I would say ‘float’,”
Mr de Cleene said. “Although we are a small economy, you cannot play round all the time devaluing, revaluing, and having others coming to you in the chess game. “Sooner or later you have got to play with their money rather than yours,” Mr de Cleene said.
