Otaki Maori
Special correspondent Wellington
The northern visitor, Penycae, looks the one to beat in the Lion Brown Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow.
Although beaten in her last couple of starts, finishing ninth behind Great Avon at Waikato and eighth behind San Lefair at Ellerslie before, his previous form is sound.
Penycae is being asked to carry 51kg in the Lion Brown Cup, a drop of 3.5 kg at his last outing. His main opposition should come from Marlon, which recently returned from an Australian campaign and in two starts in New Zealand has scored a third and a second.
On August 24 Marlon, lined up at Hastings in the Centennial Cup to finish third then had a break before gaining a second, again at Hastings, last Saturday over 1400 m.
Bronze Valley also has claims. Although fairly inconsistent, he has shown the ability and on his day could :hreaten. He drops back from 2000 m events in his last couple of starts. In the second leg, the Night Eruption Handicap, Silver Samurai looks to have the best chance.
Trained by Diane Eckersley at Otaki, Silver Samurai has put in some honest efforts in four starts this term and in his last couple has been placed second with fighting runs. He was beaten by Tanalyse at Wellington in the Nainai Handicap then followed Lady Arabella home at Hastings on October 27. His main challengers should be Skybiri and Amber Man. Skybiri showed promise last year as a two-year-old and has raced well again this season while Amber Man has been racing consistently lately.
