‘North’ polo team records second success
The “North” team of Brian Storer, Beau Mcßae and Brian Burrowes recorded its second win in as many days in the polo at the Canterbury A. and P. Show yesterday. Like Wednesday, the match started slowly, with only one goal scored in the first chukka, but from then on there were goals aplenty. The match proved something oL. a benefit for Mcßae, who scored . no fewer than four of his team’s goals. No matter which pony he was on, he seemed to be placed in the right position at the right time. The “South’s” No. 2,
Denis O’Sullivan, was a master at the back hand shot, pulling the ball back from the goal line a number of times under threat from the oncoming charge of opposition ponies. Warren Wells, the “South” No. 1, came into his own during the middle stages of the third chukka. His pony had no fear of the fence, and Wells scooped up the ball from the side of the field and then played a neat chip into the goal. Minutes later, after his team-mate, O’Sullivan, had got the ball to the opposite end of the field, Wells was again on hand to flick the ball neatly
into the goal, and equalise, 4-4.
Storer too had a good day, with three goals, one of which came when he scooped the ball up from under his pony’s neck and then fired it between the pylons. As in the first match, the “North” pulled away to a handy lead during the final chukka, and the winning margain of three goals was the same.
However, the crunch game is today’s for the Hagley Trophy will be decided on just the one match, and the “South” cannot be discounted.
