NZPA-AFP New York The New York Stock Market, open for trading yesterday for the first time on a United States Presidential election day, was more active than expected, and prices firmed sharply. The preliminary industrial index closed at 1,242.92,
up 13.69 points. About 101 million shares changed hands. At the close yesterday, 1103 stocks were higher, 471 lower, and 442 unchanged. The strength of the market was attributed by analysts to a marked fall in non-bank interest rates on Tuesday.
