‘No-one should shed any tears’
NZPA-AP New York Geraldine Ferraro, saying, “We put our best effort into this campaign,” waited to learn whether the voters had chosen to elect her the first woman Vice-President in United States history. “There is absolutely nothing not to be proud of,” in the campaign, she was quoted as telling her staff. “No-one should shed any tears.” Bob Barnett, an aide to Ms Ferraro, quoted her as making the comments to her staff in the early evening. Ms Ferraro watched the returns in a large private suite in the New York Hilton Hotel with her family and staff. In the face of polls saying that the Democratic ticket was heading for defeat, Ms Ferraro said that her campaign had had a lasting impact, whatever the voters’ verdict at the polls. Hers was “a credible campaign showing that women can run for national office, that women should
be considered for national office and that we’ve finally opened up the doors of opportunity for women throughout this country.” She expected her pioneering effort to be an incentive for other women. “I think you’re going to see more women running in the future. I’m delighted by that,” she said.
