Forced stock sale likely
PA Timaru Forced sales of stock are likely as drought worsens in South Canterbury. High-country runholders are helping drought-stricken coastal farmers by offering grazing for stock. But stock company sources say that forced sales are “just around the corner.” A Ministry of Agriculture
farm advisory officer in Timaru, Mr Bruce Binnie, said that stock were in reasonable condition but the outlook was not good because of dwindling feed. “Farmers are taking appropriate action by the early weaning of lambs,” he said, “some are being sold as stores and most producers have their work
ewes well sorted out.” The president of South Canterbury Federated Farmers, Mr D. B. Simpson, said he was concerned about the widespread nature of the drought and the serious financial implications for farmers. “Many are still suffering from the 1982-83 drought,” he said.
