Mr Quigley the only choice, says Socred
Only Mr Derek Quigley has the right to succeed Sir Robert Muldoon as leader of the National Party, according to the president of the Social Credit Party, Mr Stefan Lipa. Speaking at a joint meeting of the Rangiora Jaycees and Lions Clubs Mr Lipa said that all the other hopefuls for the top post in the National Party caucus had been tainted by their support of Muldoonism over the years. “Only Derek Quigley (the former member of Parliament for Rangiora) had the guts to oppose Sir Robert’s policies,” said Mr Lipa. “All the other hopefuls actually supported him while National was winning. Now they are saying Sir Robert
should be replaced because they have lost an election and they want power back.”
Mr Lipa said it was likely that Sir Robert would remain as leader of the National Party.
“He has given his opponents plenty of time to shoot their mouths off,” he said. “But now that a tough Budget is upon us, he will take this opportunity of impaling Labour with its own document and reminding the public of his warnings about devaluation. “Over the next few months he will overshadow all the aspirants, and in February give them a good run for their money. “They have given one of the wiliest campaigners this country has seen all the time he has needed to rebuff the challenges,” Mr Lipa said.
