Brothers admit drug charges
PA Nelson Brothers who imported LSD from Australia were remanded to the High Court for sentence when they admitted the charges in the District Court at Nelson this week. ! ' : 2;;" ~!' Kenneth George Briggs, aged 23, a labourer and Antoni Colin Briggs, aged 21, a furniture remover, both of Nelson, were arrested in police raids recently on 10 Nelson addresses. At the same time the Australian police arrested three former Nelson residents on drug possession charges in Sydney. Sergeant Kevin Cross told the Court that the police were aware that LSD was being sold in Nelson between January and October. In March they arrested a man with paper LSD squares in the shape of a phantom head. In July more LSD strips became available. These were in the shape of a red heart cased in cellophane. In August more LSD was
available. Extensive inquiries in New Zealand and Australia revealed that Kenneth arid Antoni Briggs were importing LSD In September, a High Court Judge issued a search warrant. " j? On September 26, Kenneth Briggs telephoned Antoni Briggs in Sydney and discussed importing the drug. Antoni Briggs said supplies were not too good but he should be able to arrange something. He had lost his usual source of LSD supply. . - On October 13, Antoni Briggs returned to Nelson and on October 17 detectives interviewed people arrested in a drugs raid. ’ Kenneth Briggs said he used LSD before going on an overseas trip. When he returned he had little money so he asked his brother to supply him with LSD He sold some of the phantom-head variety for $l5 a “trip.” : Sergeant Cross said Kenneth Briggs gave $3OOO to Antoni Briggs and kept $2OOO profit for himself.
