Abortion consultant resigns in protest
PA Dunedin A Dunedin abortion consultant, Dr T. K. Sidey, has resigned in protest against the harassment of his patients by anti-abortion activists.
Dr Sidey, in a letter printed in the “Otago Daily Times” yesterday, said that over the last three weeks he had had continual harassment, as had his patients, from “a small group of people who seem to have little else to do other than wave placards.” “It disgusts me that members of an anti-abortion group, whose views one could in the past respect, stoop to such low levels,” Dr Sidey wrote. “I would like to make it known that I am resigning as a consultant, not because these people worry me but for the effect they have on my patients. - )
“These consultations are only a small part of our job which deals with sick women, maybe in pain, requiring surgery, dr care and support in their pregnancies.
“Do they need a minority group harassing and upsetting them at this time?”
Dr Sidey said that although the abortion system had been set up by an act of Parliament, the law seemed powerless to stop this activity and to “allow us to practise in peace.”
