Sponsor for athletic club
One of the strongest athletic clubs in Canterbury, New Brighton, has obtained a substantial sponsorship from Bascik Cartage, Ltd. Subject to the approval of the Canterbury Athletic Centre, the club will in future be known as Bascik Cartage New Brighton Athletic Club.
The sponsorship is for an undisclosed five-figure sum, spread over three years. It is believed to be the first of its kind for an athletic club in the South Island.
New Brighton has a membership of almost 500 athletes, including a number of New Zealand’s leading performers. It is regarded as
the strongest harrier club in New Zealand. A children’s section caters for about 200 young athletes, and has gained the most points in the last two seasons in the Canterbury Children’s Athletic Centre, meetings.
The club has its own track and club rooms at Rawhiti Domain, facilities which few other clubs can boast.
The sponsorship was the climax to a four-year search, the club secretary, Mr George Steffens, said last evening. It was a new development for an athletic club and, hopefully, it would encourage other clubs to find their own sponsors, he said.
