First polo ‘blood’ to ‘North’ team
“North” has taken first blood against “South” in the first of three polo matches being played each day during the Canterbury A. and P. Show. Names can be deceptive for in fact both teams consist of South Islanders. The high cost of bringing a North Island team south for the show has meant a de-
parture from the usual inter-island clash, but in spite of that the excitement and action was still apparent. The final margin of 8-5 to the North flattered it, for the teams were indeed well matched. It was only in the last chukka that the margin was established thanks to
goals from all three team members, Beau Mcßae, Brian Storer and Brian Burrowes.
Denis O’Sullivan, at No. 2 for the South played with style. He had an ability to pick the ball up from hard against the sides of the fence, and there was one goal in the fencing chukka
that anyone would have been proud of. He charged up the left of the field, hugging the fence, and sent in a straight and true angled shot from about 40m out.
Stuart Crutchley, the South’s No. 3, also had an impressive match, especially in defence, and it was
he who scored the side’s last goal.
However, the goal of the match came from Burrowes in the closing moments. His side already had the game won, but from 60m out he hit a mighty shot that went high and clean above the uprights. It was a good way to finish.
