New 4WD saloon
Volkswagen is going to join its other partner in the West German automotive group, Audi, and produce a four-wheel-drive saloon based on the Golf. It may make its debut at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Indications are that four-wheel-drive will be the “in” trend next year. Ford, supposedly committed to a four-wheel-drive version of its Granada replacement, is said to have a 4WD Sierra model bn the stocks, while BMW is said to be working on a 4WD 3-Series saloon. In the meantime, the Japanese Daihatsu firm is said to be going after Range Rover business with its new Fourtrak Estate. This is a four-wheel-drive station waggon, powered by a 2litre petrol engine or a 2.7litre turbocharged diesel unit. ‘lt is based on Daihatsu’s existing Fourtrak range < of commercial vehicles, but has a longer wheelbase and a higher roof at the rear.
