Dog-wolf hybrid

Sir,—The article on dog-wolf hybrids in the U.S.S.R. (“The Press, November 3) was a classic example of popular pseudo-science. Every gardener and pet breeder knows that first generation hybrids are generally intermediate between their parents. The behavioural characteristics of the supposed hybrids are typical of many domestic dogs: day-time activity, no fear of fire, vicious atacks on pedestrians and cyclists. Dogs do these things in Christchurch, Where wolves are unknown. I hope the article does not lead to public alarm and a spate of wolf killing in Russia. Similar misinformation led to the extinction of wolves in Scandinavia. — Yours, etc., P. J. GARNOCK-JONES. November 6, 1984.
