Mrs Willcox resigns because off harassment
PA Auckland The chairwoman of Free Nation New Zealand, which backs no Government interference in sport has resigned, saying she wants no repeat of the harassment she and her family suffered during the 1981 Springbok tour. But Mrs Yvonne Willcox will remain a member of the organisation, established in March, 1981.
She has said that her life was threatened three times during the 1981 tour. Last week the windscreen of her car was smashed “for no apparent reason.” Mrs Willcox said the Gleneagles Agreement was
supposed to result in personal freedom in sport, but that had now been lost. She said she believed Nt Zealand sports, organisations had to take a stand against Government interference in their sports. “In this country, it is a kind of blackmail situation,” she said. "The Government says ‘you play sport with South Africa and we will take away your funds.’ “They (the sports bodies) should tell the Government to mind its own business.”
She said that only strong leadership within sports organisations could force the Government to change its stance on the Gleneagles Agreement.
