Objections to Northcote bus route
About 40 Glenmore Avenue residents squeezed into the Waimairi District Council chambers last evening to petition against the proposed extension of the Northcote bus service along their street. - , A further 88 residents had also signed the petition which was presented to, the Council’s works, reserves and traffic committee. Mr D. L. Jack, who spoke on behalf of the petitioners, said all Glenmore Avenue’s residents, except one, sighed the petition.
None of the residents had asked for any extension to the present bus route, said Mr Jack. The extension, which the Christchurch Transport Board intends to begin on December 17, would mean that about 60 buses a day would have to negotiate the narrow winding carriageway of Glenmore Avenue, he said. The increased traffic of heavy vehicles would increase the danger for children cycling' to and fr®t school as well as the pot«S-
tially hazardous intersection of Glenmore Avenue, Kimberley Street and Mendip Place, he said. Any heavy traffic on the avenue made “glass vibrate and dishes rattle in the houses.” The petitioners supported by the district engineer, Mr A. J. Lamb, recommended that an alternative route be used along the wider, straighter Claridges Road nearby. The traffic engineer, Mr Peter Atkinson, said that technically the question of
safety was difficult to determine and not just dependent on the width and straightness of a road. Or A. A. Adcock said he detected a lack of liaison between the council and the Transport Board over proposed bus routes in the district Mr Lamb said that the council had been aware of the proposed route and staff had considered it informally with the board. The/, committee will recommend that the council
supports the petitioners, refer the matter to the Christchurch Transport Board for consideration and request that the board receive ■ representatives from the committee and petitioners at any meeting called to consider the matter. Mrs Margaret Murray said that a board member had advised her that it was considering holding a meeting so that the public could make submissions on proposed routes. >
