Third dump urgently needed, council told
A third metropolitan refuse station was desperately needed in Christchurch the Paparua County Council was told last evening. Cr E. C. Britnell, the council’s representative on the metropolitan refuse committee, reported to the council, that the Ruru Road and Parkhouse Road stations were being grossly overworked. Since the opening of the Ruru Road station in September, it had put through an average of 1038 tonnes a week. The design throughout was 750 tonnes and it had been expected that until the northern station was commissioned this would be overworked to 1000 tonnes, not 1038 tonnes, he said.
“Refuse is often not cleared from the floor at night, in breach of the
Paparua County Council’s condition of consent,” he said. At the Parkhouse Read station, more refuse was arriving than could be handled in an 8% hour day. Excessive hours were being worked by employees at the station and most worked at least a 12-hour day, said Cr Britnell. “From time to time, the compactor has had to be shut down for maintenance and the effect has been felt for several days following. Even if approval to build the northern station was given immediately, this situation would prevail until late 1986.” Excessive hours were also being worked at the landfill, in breach of Waimariri District Council Town Planning conditions, he said.
More machinery had been ordered but this would not
solve the problem. “The obvious answer is to build the northern station as quickly as possible.” The council will send a letter to the metropolitan refuse committee asking it to to urgently consider proceeding with the third refuse station as soon as possible. Vandalism The council decided to increase from $lOO to $2OO, the reward for supplying information leading to the conviction of anyone committing acts of vandalism in Paparua County domains and reserves. The offer will be advertised in newspapers and the county booklet at frequent intervals. The policy was one of many that have been reviewed by the policy review sub-committee.
