U.S. leads bridge
NZPA-AP Seattle The United States emerged victorious, 20-10, in its match against Italy yesterday in the world contract bridge team olympiad. The Americans gained heavily by staying out of a slam bid by the Italians, and by taking advantage of two game swings and a doubled partial that resulted in a misunderstanding. The victory moved the
United States into third place in group 8 while Italy stayed in second place. Indonesia held on to first place by tying with Finland, 15-15, while Norway fell from third to fourth after losing to Spain, 19-11. Twenty-one of the 27 rounds have been played. The top four finishers in each group will qualify to play in the quarterfinals starting on Wednesday. In group A Poland defeated Trinidad and Tobago, 22-8, to remain in first place. Hie with Denmark, which defeated defending champion, France, 16-14. France remained in fourth place with the Netherlands, a blitz winner over Singapore, close behind in fifth. In the 23-nation women’s series, the Netherlands resumed their winning ways, defeating Chinese Taipei, 20-10. With 16 of 23 rounds completed, the Dutch have won 15 of 16 matches.
