By

G. K. YULE

.The country’s most prestigious light harness event, the New Zealand Trotting Cup, will from J 985 be sponsored by Toyota New Zealand, Limited. jA stake of $175,000 will be attached to next year’s race, said the president of the Metropolitan Trotting Club, Mr Dan McCormick, when announcing the sponsorship of what will become known as the Toyota New Zealand Trotting Cup. iThe stake for this year’s race will be $125,000. The company will sponsor the event for at least three years./The amount of the sponsorship was not announced. Mr McCormick welcomed the company’s sponsorship of the event. “With their

assistance we hope to offer even more stake money to attract the best horses in Australia and New Zealand,” he said. “It is the first time since the event was first raced in 1904 that the club has been commercially assisted with the race,” said Mr McCormick.

It was fitting that his company should become closely associated with New Zealand’s leading light-har-ness event, said the chief executive of Toyota New Zealand, Limited, Mr Bob Field, of Wellington, in a message to the club. . “New Zealand has a great reputation for producing top race horses and we hope that with our assistance the sport will prosper even further,” said Mr Field, who is at present overseas.
