Ridge ventilation system for tunnel greenhouses
The invention of a ridge ventilation system has boosted the sale of Harford tunnel greenhouses in Canterbury. The designer, Mr Kevin Harford, estimates he has sold 35,0005 q m of tunnel
houses since the system was first used two years ago. The ventilation system has proved so successful that Mr Harford said he regretted not taking out patents for it.
Mr Harford is a former airline pilot who built his first tunnel house four years
ago. Early tunnel houses were limited to a length of about 15m because there was insufficient ventilation for crops, but Mr Harford
worked out a method of inserting a vent in the ridge. Harford tunnel houses are available in a variety of lengths and in single span and multi-bay versions. Single hoop tunnel houses are 9m wide and multi-bay models have spans of 7.5 m. Mr Harford will have a greenhouse on display at the Canterbury show. The tunnel houses are available with a single or double skin covering.
