Coal barging may open Marsden station

PA Wellington Barging coal to the Marsden B power station is being looked at as a way of bringing the project out of mothballs. The Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, said a feasibility study into the economics and timing of barging West Coast coal north to the station had begun, and would be completed by March, 1985. Marsden B was costing taxpayers about $l4 million in interest charges while contributing nothing in return, he told the annual

conference of the Institute of Mining. It had been in mothballs since its completion in 1979. “It is important that this power station is put to use in order to take pressure off the Waikato coal developments, which are already under strain in meeting the requirements of New Zealand Steel (at Glenbrook) and the Electricity Division,” he said.

If State Coal Mines were to meet those requirements there would need to be a four-fold increase in coal production during the next decade.
