Youths riot on Takapuna beach
PA Auckland Rioting youths caused havoc on Takapuna Beach on the Auckland north shore on Saturday night. About 30 police wearing riot gear faced 300 bottle-throwing youths for several hours. Violence erupted soon after 9 p.m. when police were called to the beach by residents complaining about the behaviour of the revellers round a bonfire. The Police were showered with bottles and reinforcements had to be called in. Two policemen were injured by flying bottles and the windscreen of a police car was smashed.
The Fire Service extinguished the bonfire using
sand after declaring a yellow alert civil disturbance. Eleven persons were arrested on the beach and nearby. They will appear in the North Shore District Court today on several charges including riotous behaviour, disorderly behaviour, assault, and insulting language. Several other persons were arrested later. North Shore police will take special action this evening to deal with violent Guy Fawkes revellers. The operation, planned after several years of trouble at the beach, will involve police, Ministry of
Transport, Fire Service, and Takapuna City Council staff.
