Young Nats suggest changes
Substantial changes to the National Party organisation have been suggested by the Canterbury-Westland division of the Young Nationals. Senior division members met yesterday to discuss submissions to the party’s review committee. They supported private enterprise, competition, individual effort, and personal freedom, said the chairman, Mr Craig Allan. National’s philosophical aims needed to be reaffirmed by positive action, he said.
Details of the submissions will be heard when the review committee meets in
Christchurch later this month. The Young Nationals also want the party to encourage young, progressive people, particularly women, to become candidates. Established seats held by “nonperforming” members of Parliament should be more freely contested, said Mr Allan. The party leadership was discussed. The division agreed that the next leader should have a “dynamic approach” to youth issues, especially education and the
associated problems of employment, housing, and the environment.
