Darts title retained

Gordon Allpress successfully defended his Canterbury singles darts title when he beat Brian Trethewey, 42, at the association’s hall in Balfour terrace yesterday. It was Allpress’s seventh provincial singles victory. He lost only one match, against the double national champion, Barry Whittaker. However, Whittaker must still wait for his first Canterbury singles crown. He survived until the last

eight, but two relatively unknown players, Peter Arnold and Kevin Smith, went through to join AUpress and Trethewey in the semifinals. Yesterday’s win completed a highly satisfactory week-end for AUpress. On Saturday, he combined with Chris Garrett to beat Whittaker and John Dewar in the final of the Tinwald pairs tournament.
